With Notewise 4.0, AI is becoming a bigger part of your note-taking experience — and we know privacy matters. Whenever possible, your data is processed on-device or within Notewise. When third-party AI services are needed, we only share what’s necessary, keep your identity separate, and never use your notes to train AI models. Here’s how it works.
With Notewise 4.0 bringing AI more deeply into the note-taking experience, we know many of you have questions about what happens to your notes, where your data is processed, and whether AI changes how we handle your privacy.
Your notes can contain some of your most personal and important information. We take that responsibility seriously, and we want to be transparent about how Notewise processes your data today — as well as what we’re doing to keep more of that processing within Notewise itself.
If you use Notewise locally, your notebook and document content remains stored on your device and is not uploaded to our servers.
If you use Notewise Cloud, your content is stored and processed within our Cloud infrastructure so it can stay synced across devices and power features such as search, sharing, collaboration, and AI-powered experiences.
Notewise 4.0 builds on the content already stored in Notewise Cloud to power features such as AI Note, nothing more than that. What has changed is the output you see: AI Note uses the content available through Cloud to bring the most relevant information to the top of each note.
As AI becomes a bigger part of Notewise, one of our priorities is simple:
Process as much of your data as possible within Notewise infrastructure.
Not every intelligent feature needs to send your content to an external AI provider. We design Notewise Cloud to handle as much processing directly within our own infrastructure as possible, reducing the need to involve external service providers.
Today:
These may look like infrastructure details behind the scenes, but they represent an important direction for us: reducing unnecessary third-party data processing wherever we can.
And we want to keep improving these numbers.
For some advanced AI tasks, we may still use trusted third-party AI providers, such as OpenAI.
There is a trade-off we have to make carefully. Self-hosted models allow us to keep processing entirely within Notewise, while some external models can currently provide better performance and higher-quality results for more complex tasks.
Our goal is to use third-party providers only when they meaningfully improve the experience, while continuing to expand what our own infrastructure can handle.
Importantly, our privacy principles do not change when a third-party provider is involved.
When an AI feature requires an external service:
Whether a request is processed by our own infrastructure or requires one of our service providers, protecting your information remains part of how we design the system.
Privacy isn’t only about what we write in a policy. It is also about how the product is built.
Every handwriting recognition request we can process ourselves, every file we can convert without relying on an external service, and every AI task we can run using models hosted within Notewise reduces the amount of data that needs to leave our infrastructure in the first place.
That is why we are continuing to invest in our own Cloud infrastructure and self-hosted AI capabilities.
At the same time, we don’t want privacy improvements to come at the cost of making AI significantly less useful. For tasks where external models currently provide a substantially better experience, we’ll continue to use them carefully and with the privacy protections described above.
Over time, our aim is to bring more processing inside Notewise while continuing to improve the quality of the features you use.
AI is evolving quickly, and so is Notewise.
As we build new AI-powered features, we’ll continue to work toward a few principles:
Notewise 4.0 is an important step in bringing AI into the product, but these principles go beyond any single release.
We believe useful AI and strong privacy should be built together, and we’ll continue improving both.
